Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Hello, Dr. Kehoe here with Health From Within in Orland Park, Illinois. I’m doing this video today to talk about Chiropractic care and pregnancy and how it can help before, during, and even after pregnancy. So, we’ll start with the before. The way that Chiropractic care can help before ever becoming pregnant at all is really two fold. The first aspect is making sure that you have proper communication from the brain down to the body to allow for optimal function and healing throughout the body, but particularly, when it comes to the reproductive organs. So, making sure that that communication pathway is free of any interference is crucial and will allow for the greatest success in becoming pregnant in the first place.

And the second aspect is going to involve balancing the hips, pelvis, and sacrum, so that allows the uterus to have the proper positioning which is going to set up the baby for success long term during the pregnancy. So, Chiropractic care can really help set up your body in a great way for success when you do become pregnant. So the second thing is how Chiropractic care can help during pregnancy and this is probably the most well know and even most maybe important aspect of how Chiropractic care can help somebody that is pregnant. The main thing there is again is making sure that the hips and pelvis are balanced and relaxed and in the proper position. Because we want to make sure that the baby has the most room to position itself properly and to grow and develop biomechanically, neurologically, structurally so that it has the room to actually develop properly and avoid any major complications when it comes to being born. And another aspect of making sure that the pelvis is balanced and providing the baby enough room is to avoid any complications like having to do c-sections or really difficult or long birthing processes. Okay, so making sure that the uterus, pelvis, sacrum, are all aligned and relaxed will allow for the easiest birth possible. And, during pregnancy mothers experience a lot of aches and pains that they are not really used to because when you have that extra weight it shifts your center of gravity to a different place, usually more forward and that puts different stress on the joints that mom may not really be used to so that creates a lot of aches, pains, and a lot of discomfort during pregnancy. So, Chiropractic care can really, really be helpful in easing that pressure, in easing a lot of that pain and making for a more comfortable pregnancy overall.

The last piece is Chiropractic care after the birth. We’ll just stick with talking about Mom, we’ll have another conversation about how it is beneficial for the baby but for now, we’ll stick with talking about Mom. During pregnancy it’s really important that the pelvis and sacrum and other bones in the body like the spine can shift around and grow and make room for the baby to develop. You have a lot of hormones during pregnancy that allow for that to happen and it’s vital and needs to happen. But, the complication with that is sometimes bones in the spine and the pelvis can shift out of alignment due to that relaxation of the bones in the spine and pelvis. And, if those don’t get corrected either during pregnancy or shortly after birth they can create problems down the line if they don’t get corrected they can lead to a lot more pain, a lot more disfunction, even things like urinary incontinence- all sorts of complications if we don’t fix what shifted out of alignment during pregnancy and during the birthing process. It can be a pretty intense and almost traumatic process, we want to make sure that mother gets checked shortly after birth to make sure there aren’t any  misalignments in her spine and pelvis.

That is kind of an overview of how Chiropractic care can help before, during, and after pregnancy. If you have any other questions please reach out to our office, and we will be more than happy to address them to the best of our ability.
